Freud, Psychoanalysis and Death

Eros and thanatos. Salud Ment [online]. ISSN Eros and Thanatos, respectively, love and death, are universal subjects in which human beings have been interested since the beginning of history and also probably, their access to language. Fully conscious of the lack of moderation of the task proposed, the author intends to make a modest contribution to these two concepts and what they represent, inspired by two sources: classical myths, on the one hand, and the work of some poets and thinkers, mainly Plato, Goethe and Rilke, on the other hand. Eros or love In most ancient Greek myths, eros is considered as one of the great constitutive and constituent principles of the universe, as the irresistible force allowing the continuity of life in human beings and animals, in the earth and in the waters.

Death anxiety is anxiety caused by thoughts of one's own death. This classification pre-necessitates a degree of anxiety which is persistent and interferes with everyday functioning. Death anxiety can cause extreme timidness with a person's attitude towards discussing anything to do with death. Robert Langs distinguishes three types of death anxiety: [7] [8] [9]. Predatory death anxiety arises from the fear of being harmed. Unicellular organisms have receptors that have evolved to react to external dangers, along with self-protective, responsive mechanisms made to increase the likelihood of survival in the face of chemical and physical forms of attack or danger.

Life and death in Freud and Heidegger

Heidegger and Psychoanalysis? William J. Richardson, Ph. This paper examines the possible relationship between the thought of Martin Heidegger as it emerges in the Zollikon Seminaire through his exchange with Medard Boss and the perspective of psychoanalysis as it appears through the prism of Jacques Lacan's rereading of Freud. Heidegger takes Freud to be victim of a positivist conception of science that seeks to explain pathological human behaviour by a complex of consciously discernible causes.

Following the hauntological work of Jacques Derrida and a few of his followers, I consider the ways in which the late Bowie came to haunt the late Bowie, how mortality and mourning condition his final output, especially on Blackstar , his last album. In tracing these ghostly traces, I show how his music and videography pursue an alternative form of composition beyond the conventional attempts toward narrative closure of autobiography, a form of spectral rhetoric that I outline as autobituary. In the form of autobituary, I suggest that Bowie provides one avenue for reconceiving the conventional relation between life and death, self and other, addressor and addressee. In tracing these ghostly traces, I hope to show how these records function as more than records, providing an alternative form of self-writing and autodeictic mourning beyond the narrative closure attempted by ordinary autobiography, a form of spectral rhetoric that I will outline as autobituary.
