A Companion to Michael Oakeshott
The enterprise is to keep afloat on an even keel; the sea is both friend and enemy: and the seamanship consists in using the resources of a traditional manner of behaviour in order to make a friend of every hostile occasion. And it applies to the state's international journey as much as it does to the scope and substance of domestic political activity. Most users should sign in with their email address. For those unacquainted with Oakeshott's brilliant but sometimes enigmatic writings on civil association, history, the nature of human experience, education, and political authority, this volume stands as a tribute to his growing intellectual stature in the twenty-first century. It shows just how far Oakeshott studies in the Anglophone world have come in the past two decades, and it lays out a path for where they might productively go in the future. Yet his writings—at least in America—rarely get the time or attention they deserve. This is a book anyone who is starting in on Oakeshott can greatly benefit from, and which anyone who knows Oakeshott will enjoy. It will be of great value to advanced scholars as well as students unfamiliar with his ideas. It is now more than twenty years since Michael Oakeshott died on December 18, Since then there has been a veritable flood of scholarship, consisting of dozens of monographs and many more dozens of articles, devoted to every aspect of his thought, from his conservatism, political philosophy, and theory of history to his aesthetics, philosophy of religion, and ideas on education.
This introductory article explains the theme of this book, which is about political theory. It evaluates the impact of literature that proved especially influential in framing debate through the last decades of the twentieth century and opening years of the twenty-first and examines the historical work on political thought. It describes the combination of concerns that runs through the work of John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin, and the liberal egalitarian tradition and identifies areas of debate that have proved particularly fruitful over the last thirty years. It analyses political theory from a global perspective and discusses body politic. Keywords: political theory , political thought , John Rawls , Ronald Dworkin , egalitarian tradition , body politic. Michael Oakeshott — is often described as a conservative thinker. But this description notices only one aspect of his thought and invites misunderstanding because of its ambiguities. His ideas spring from a lifetime of reading in the history of European thought, sharpened by philosophical reflection on its arguments and presuppositions. Oakeshott worked on the premise that philosophical questions are interconnected and that answering them requires wide-ranging critical reflection. A recurrent theme in his writings on moral and political life is the tension between individuality, which implies plurality, and its denial, which he calls barbarism. Individual freedom is threatened when politics is conceived as the pursuit of ideals. The recent interest of political philosophers in the republican idea of freedom as independence or nondomination suggests the continuing relevance of his thought.
