The last man is the archetypal nihilist, only able to destroy, but unable to build and act upon a self-actualized ethos. The last man's first appearance is in "Zarathustra's Prologue.

R.J. Hollingdale

While wholly enamored of the aristocratic, Hellenistic past of literary invention, the often bilious German philosopher nonetheless had no illusions about the nature of power, which does as it will and is not held in check by what we take for common values. Nietzsche may have had nothing but contempt for liberal, bourgeois society, but he did not seek to replace it with egalitarian socialism or anything of the kind. It is this sometimes jarring contrast between his seemingly rightist politics and his unsystematic dismantling of the ideological mechanisms by which state power justifies itself that make Nietzsche such a confusing philosopher, one so easily misinterpreted and misread. Later readings of Nietzsche, like those of the late Walter Kaufmann or Nietzsche scholar and philosopher Babette Babich , place him in dialogue with Hegel, Kant, and Aristotle, and with the Existentialists. Nietzsche has been called an existentialist thinker himself, as well as a pragmatist, naturalist, and pre-postmodernist—all designations that get at important aspects of his thought, e.

Hollingdale's Nietzsche volume is not merely a biography and guide to reading Frederich Nietzsche, it is a major scholarly achievement which radically revises the accepted view of Nietzsche as a near crazy-genius who writes brilliant aphorisms on his way to insanity, to a view of a consistent growing philosophical genius who happened to go mad after finishing his major philosophical contributions. The book reads well, interestingly, clearly and with well-argued and demonstrated claims. It is simply a must as a companion reading for any serious look at Nietzsche's work. I do plan to post a much more detailed outline of the book and my notes and reflections along the way of reading it, but here I offer a shorter summary of two main issues: the standard view of Nietzsche vs. Hollingdale's account the essence of Nietzsche's position according to Hollingdale.

Nietzsche, Friedrich W. - Biography

Nietzsche was a German philosopher, essayist, and cultural critic. His writings on truth, morality, language, aesthetics, cultural theory, history, nihilism , power, consciousness, and the meaning of existence have exerted an enormous influence on Western philosophy and intellectual history. Some interpreters of Nietzsche believe he embraced nihilism, rejected philosophical reasoning, and promoted a literary exploration of the human condition, while not being concerned with gaining truth and knowledge in the traditional sense of those terms. However, other interpreters of Nietzsche say that in attempting to counteract the predicted rise of nihilism, he was engaged in a positive program to reaffirm life, and so he called for a radical, naturalistic rethinking of the nature of human existence, knowledge, and morality. Taking this approach, however, risks confusing aspects of the Nietzsche legend with what is important in his philosophical work, and many commentators are rightly skeptical of readings derived primarily from biographical anecdotes. When young Friedrich was not quite five, his father died of a brain hemorrhage, leaving Franziska, Friedrich, a three-year old daughter, Elisabeth, and an infant son.

Nietzsche, Friedrich W. - Biography

Heidegger and Jaspers on Nietzsche pp Cite as. It is not the intention here to present or even to outline a biography of Nietzsche. This would take us too far afield from the real intention of our investigations. There is a multitude of special problems pertaining to a Nietzsche biography and most existing biographies suffer from two serious limitations: 1 most biographies of Nietzsche display a radical bias of some sort on the part of the biographer e. In other words, there is at present no authoritative comprehensive biography of Nietzsche.

As an esoteric moralist, Nietzsche aims at freeing higher human beings from their false consciousness about morality their false belief that this morality is good for them , not at a transformation of society at large. Or what else should we call that which informs it — and us? Yet Nietzsche also does not confine his criticisms of morality to some one religiously, philosophically, socially or historically circumscribed example.
