An antidote is a substance that can counteract a form of poisoning. Antidotes for anticoagulants are sometimes referred to as reversal agents. The antidotes for some particular toxins are manufactured by injecting the toxin into an animal in small doses and extracting the resulting antibodies from the host animals' blood. This results in an antivenom that can be used to counteract venom produced by certain species of snakes , spiders , and other venomous animals. Some animal venoms, especially those produced by arthropods such as certain spiders , scorpions , and bees are only potentially lethal when they provoke allergic reactions and induce anaphylactic shock ; as such, there is no "antidote" for these venoms; however anaphylactic shock can be treated e.

PAUL J. N -acetylcysteine is the acetylated variant of the amino acid L-cysteine and is widely used as the specific antidote for acetaminophen overdose. Other applications for N -acetylcysteine supplementation supported by scientific evidence include prevention of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation, prevention of contrast-induced kidney damage during imaging procedures, attenuation of illness from the influenza virus when started before infection, treatment of pulmonary fibrosis, and treatment of infertility in patients with clomiphene-resistant polycystic ovary syndrome. Preliminary studies suggest that N -acetylcysteine may also have a role as a cancer chemopreventive, an adjunct in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori , and prophylaxis of gentamicin-induced hearing loss in patients on renal dialysis. Although N -acetylcysteine is widely known as an antidote to acetaminophen overdose, 1 it has multiple other uses supported by varying levels of evidence.
Antidotes are agents that negate the effect of a poison or toxin. Antidotes mediate its effect either by preventing the absorption of the toxin, by binding and neutralizing the poison, antagonizing its end-organ effect, or by inhibition of conversion of the toxin to more toxic metabolites. Antidote administration may not only result in the reduction of free or active toxin level, but also in the mitigation of end-organ effects of the toxin by mechanisms that include competitive inhibition, receptor blockade or direct antagonism of the toxin. Reduction in free toxin level can be achieved by specific and non-specific agents that bind to the toxin. The most commonly used non-specific binding agent is activated charcoal. Specific binders include chelating agents, bioscavenger therapy and immunotherapy.
