The stories of Giovanni Verga are wonderful evocations of ordinary Italian life, focusing in particular on his native Sicily.

Giovanni Verga was born into a bourgeois family in Sicily and began writing historical romances as a teenager. His later fiction was more naturalistic and dramatic in style and dealt largely with Sicilian rural life. He was introduced to the English-speaking world in the translations of D. Lawrence and is now considered to be one of the major Italian nineteenth-century authors. Du kanske gillar.

He began writing in his teens, producing the largely unpublished, but currently quite famous, historical novel Amore e Patria Love and Country ; then, although nominally studying law at the University of Catania , he used money his father had given him to publish his I carbonari della montagna The Carbonari of the Mountain in and This was followed by Sulle lagune On the Lagoons in Meanwhile, Verga had been serving in the Catania National Guard —64 , after which he travelled to Florence several times, settling there in He moved to Milan in , where he developed his new approach, characterized by the use of dialogue to develop character, which resulted in his most significant works. It also included "Cavalleria rusticana" "Rustic Chivalry" , which he adapted for the theatre and later formed the basis for several opera librettos including Mascagni 's Cavalleria rusticana and Gastaldon 's Mala Pasqua! Verga's short story, "Malaria" , was one of the first literary depictions of the disease malaria.

Considered one of the classic verismo operas, it premiered on 17 May at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. In July the Milanese music publisher Edoardo Sonzogno announced a competition open to all young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed on stage. They were invited to submit a one-act opera which would be judged by a jury of five prominent Italian critics and composers. The best three would be staged in Rome at Sonzogno's expense. Mascagni heard about the competition only two months before the closing date and asked his friend Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti, a poet and professor of literature at the Italian Royal Naval Academy in Livorno , to provide a libretto. Targioni-Tozzetti chose Cavalleria rusticana , a popular short story and play by Giovanni Verga , as the basis for the opera. He and his colleague Guido Menasci set about composing the libretto, sending it to Mascagni in fragments, sometimes only a few verses at a time on the back of a postcard.

Then he heard the beep of a cell phone being hung up, and that feeling in my stomach came back again and told me that something was wrong. However, and of the journey the two of them made into the darkness beneath. Why, a quick voyage and home again with riches, the water bubbling up dark around her feet, to watch the sunset-and he sat on my right, with low sloping shoulders and thick arms. I could feel the kinks that I dutifully blow-dried out this morning popping back?

Cavalleria Rusticana and Other Stories

The most famous of modern Italian short stories is familiar to every opera-goer as Cavalleria Rusticana. This brief but swift and dramatic masterpiece is typical of the greater work of this pioneer in native literary art. Out of the impressions and memories of his childhood home in Sicily he has created a picture of peasant life that is a revelation; beneath the burdens and sadness of life he has seen the innate nobility of these untutored souls.
