Phage therapy , viral phage therapy , or phagotherapy is the therapeutic use of bacteriophages to treat pathogenic bacterial infections. Phages are often compared to antibiotics. Phages tend to be more successful than antibiotics where there is a biofilm covered by a polysaccharide layer, which antibiotics typically cannot penetrate.

In the recent years, multidrug-resistant bacteria have become a global threat, and phage therapy may to be used as an alternative to antibiotics or, at least, as a supplementary approach to treatment of some bacterial infections. Here, we describe the results of bacteriophage application in clinical practice for the treatment of localized infections in wounds, burns, and trophic ulcers, including diabetic foot ulcers. This mini-review includes data from various studies available in English, as well as serial case reports published in Russian scientific literature with, at least, abstracts accessible in English. Since, it would be impossible to describe all historical Russian publications; we focused on publications included clear data on dosage and rout of phage administration. Since their discovery, bacteriophages have been considered to be potential antibacterial therapeutics for the treatment of various infectious diseases in humans.

Taking Bacteriophage Therapy Seriously: A Moral Argument

This article collection, published in Virology Journal, is intended to give new insights to the current knowledge on bacteriophage based technologies for Veterinary applications, a topic that has gained a renewed interest with the rising of bacterial resistances to the commonly used antimicrobials. They are highly genetically diverse and the most abundant biological entities on earth, being safe for humans, animals and plants. While infecting bacterial host, they promote bacteria destruction, holding therefore a highly efficient antimicrobial activity. This special issue will try to 1 disseminate current phage-based research applied to the widest range of animal species; 2 broaden the scope of phage veterinary applications, enclosing phage therapy, antimicrobial phage enzymes, phage vaccines and phage diagnosis tools. Specifically, original works and reviews focusing phage therapy, antimicrobial phage enzymes, phage vaccines, phage diagnosis tools for veterinary applications are welcome.

There is renewed interest in revisiting the use of bacteriophage to treat bacterial infections.

Chocimska 24, Warsaw, Poland. The excessive and improper use of antibiotics has led to an increasing incidence of bacterial resistance. In Europe the yearly number of infections caused by multidrug resistant bacteria is more than Few new antibiotics are in the pipeline of the pharmaceutical industry. Early in the 20th century, bacteriophages were described as entities that can control bacterial populations. Although bacteriophage therapy was developed and practiced in Europe and the former Soviet republics, the use of bacteriophages in clinical setting was neglected in Western Europe since the introduction of traditional antibiotics.

Guidelines to Compose an Ideal Bacteriophage Cocktail

Emerging antibiotic resistance is one of the most important microbiological issues of the 21st century. This poses a query regarding the future use of antibiotics and availability of other promising therapeutic alternatives. The awareness about antibiotic misuse has improved insufficiently and is evident by the increased incidences of multidrug resistant infections globally. Amongst different antibacterial therapeutic approaches phage therapy has created a niche of its own due to continuous use for treatment of human infections in Eastern Europe. Synergistic compounds along with phages have also been proposed as a better alternative compared to antibiotics or phage alone for treatment of chronic cases and seriously debilitating diseases. As such, why not allow custom made phage therapy for treatment of chronic infections?

This new volume is therefore a valuable resource for individuals engaged in the medical application of novel phage therapies. Hismain interests are phage therapy and immunobiology of phage. In the s he presented a hypothesis on protective action of endogenous phages which involves not only their antibacterial but also antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory action. Subsequently, he formulated a hypothesis on phage translocation from the gastrointestinal tract to other tissues where phages could mediate their effects. He was a co-editor of a book on phage therapy see above. He has published over 70 papers and five book chapters related to therapeutic phage application including new perspectives of clinical use of bacteriophages anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating phage effects.

The emergence of bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics has become a serious threat to public health and is considered one of the greatest challenges for contemporary medicine. Phage therapy, the use of bacteriophages as anti-bacterial agents, may offer an alternative treatment for bacterial infections. Phages have many potential applications in human medicine as well as dentistry, veterinary science, agriculture and food protection. Written by internationally recognized experts from leading world centres involved in phage research and phage therapy, this book provides comprehensive coverage of the topic with a focus on current research and emerging applications. The book opens with chapters covering the general characteristics of bacteriophages and the basic concepts of phage therapy.
