Design methods are procedures, techniques, aids, or tools for designing. They offer a number of different kinds of activities that a designer might use within an overall design process. Conventional procedures of design, such as drawing, can be regarded as design methods, but since the s new procedures have been developed that are more usually grouped together under the name of "design methods". What design methods have in common is that they "are attempts to make public the hitherto private thinking of designers; to externalise the design process".

The graduate courses that make up the program create an interdisciplinary point of view, and are taught by professors from all three schools. Studio classes accompany classroom studies, providing creative and analytical approaches, and shifting students between rigorous, technical and explorative processes in the development of both experiential and theoretical knowledge. Collaborative team projects and student-driven independent projects complement the core courses to give students both a solid grasp of the fundamentals and a deep understanding of the nuances of these fields. The M:IPD is intended for students with a non-engineering background or students with an engineering background who wish to build their skills in other disciplines. The curriculum is designed to provide students with an interdisciplinary perspective of product design.

Given the importance of this class of issues, it would have been nice to see more emphasis in this area. In summary, I do not think the book achieves the goal it sets for itself to appeal to both researchers and practitioners alike since most of the chapters are not deep enough to satisfy researchers, nor detailed enough in pragmatic recommendations to satisfy practitioners. However, readers who would like to get some initial pointers into the literature on human factors in nuclear safety will find this book to be a good starting place.

The verb to design expresses the process of developing a design. In some cases, the direct construction of an object without an explicit prior plan such as in craftwork, some engineering, coding, and graphic design may also be considered to be a design activity. The design usually has to satisfy certain goals and constraints, may take into account aesthetic, functional, economic, or socio-political considerations, and is expected to interact with a certain environment. Major examples of designs include architectural blueprints , engineering drawings , business processes , circuit diagrams , and sewing patterns.
