With the Louisiana Purchase, the United States greatly expanded its territory. The majority of US citizens, however, did not travel to the West, and had few ways to imagine what it was like. Artists played a key role in building a sense of wonder and amazement, often encouraging people to become pioneers and strike out for new experiences in the West. Eventually, many of the landscapes the artists captured—both fact-based and embellished—became iconic American scenes. Observe all of the elements of this landscape.

Considering how unexceptional snow is around the northern hemisphere, we are left wondering why are winter paintings actually so rare and sparse in Western art. True enough, winter landscapes were virtually absent from the arts until the Late Middle Age. What may seem like a simple matter of taste is actually a fascinating and complex account that encompasses climate change , feudalism , international trade , exoticism , all the way to the Industrial Revolution and the republican uprises. To tell the story of winter paintings in Western Art is to travel through the social and cultural changes of Europe from the Middle Age until Modern time. The earliest illuminated manuscripts surviving today come from monasteries in the Eastern Roman Empire and the Ostrogoths Kingdom around and dC. Besides Christian text, monks used to illuminate text from the Greek and Roman era; had it not been for their work, most of the knowledge about ancient literature would have been lost, as the ruling class at the time was no longer literate. How was that appropriate for a liturgic book?

Western and Chinese artists have different traditions in representing the world in their paintings. While Western artists start since the Renaissance to represent the world with a central perspective and focus on salient objects in a scene, Chinese artists concentrate on context information in their paintings, mainly before the midth century. We investigated whether the different typical representations influence the aesthetic preference for traditional Chinese and Western paintings in the different cultural groups. Traditional Chinese and Western paintings were presented randomly for an aesthetic evaluation to Chinese and Western participants. Both Chinese and Western paintings included two categories: landscapes and people in different scenes. Results showed a significant interaction between the source of the painting and the cultural group. For Chinese and Western paintings, a reversed pattern of aesthetic preference was observed: while Chinese participants gave higher aesthetic scores to traditional Chinese paintings than to Western paintings, Western participants tended to give higher aesthetic scores to traditional Western paintings than to Chinese paintings.
