This chapter describes the tremendous diversity that characterizes students with disabilities. Most of these students are eligible to receive special education services provided by the public schools. Yet, as this chapter shows, one cannot really speak of them as a group in a meaningful way, except perhaps with respect to the rights that all are accorded under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA , Section of the Rehabilitation Act of , and the Americans with Disabilities Act ADA by virtue of their having a disability. Some students with disabilities are never taken out of general education classrooms; others never enter a regular school building. Some have very mild disabilities observed only in school settings; others have multiple severe disabilities that affect many aspects of their lives.
There are several environmental and psychological factors that may affect the academic performance of students with physical impairments. Environmental factors such as pain, fatigue, and absenteeism and psychological factors such as motivation, self-concept, and social-emotional problems need to be identified in students with physical impairments, and modifications are required to minimize their effects. Our article presents a model of these environmental and psychological factors as they pertain to students with neuromotor, degenerative, and orthopedic impairments. Meaning and Definition of Multiple Disabilities
Multiple disabilities is a term for a person with a combination of disabilities, for instance, someone with both a sensory disability and a motor disability. Additionally, in the United States, it is a special education classification under which students are eligible for services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act , or IDEA. In some states, legislation indicates that in order to be classified as having "multiple disabilities", at least one of a student's documented disabilities must include intellectual disability. Under the IDEA, students are labeled with multiple disabilities when their educational disabilities require more than the services that are available for just one of their disabilities. For instance, if a student has a developmental disability , emotional disabilities , and a visual impairment , they may be classified as having multiple disabilities.
